The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to age 5. It is designed to ensure that children develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in school and beyond. Pupils in the EYFS stage are taught through play in stimulating and safe learning environment. The aim of the Early Years Curriculum at Iqra Academy is to build upon and nurture children’s natural inquisitiveness, energy and enthusiasm.

Key Components of EYFS

1. Learning and Development Areas:

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: Developing self-esteem, social skills, and emotional regulation.
Communication and Language: Encouraging listening, speaking, and understanding.
Physical Development: Enhancing fine and gross motor skills and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Literacy: Developing reading and writing skills through stories, songs, and phonics.
Mathematics: Introducing numbers, shapes, and basic mathematical concepts.
Understanding the World: Exploring the environment, people, and technology.
Expressive Arts and Design: Encouraging creativity through art, music, and imaginative play.

2. Learning Goals:

The EYFS specifies 17 early learning goals that children are expected to achieve by the end of the reception year. These goals cover all areas of learning and development.

3. Assessment:

Ongoing assessment is a key part of the EYFS, which helps educators understand each child's progress and development. The "Early Years Foundation Stage Profile" is completed at the end of the reception year to summarise a child's development.

4. Play-Based Learning:

Play is central to the EYFS framework. Children learn best through play, which is why activities are designed to be engaging and interactive.

5. Partnership with Parents:

Involving parents in their children's learning is crucial. Regular communication and collaboration between educators and families support children's development.

6. Safeguarding and Welfare:

The EYFS includes standards for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, ensuring a safe and caring environment.

The EYFS can be delivered in various settings, including schools, nurseries, and childminders.

Flexibility:

While the framework provides structure, it also allows for flexibility to cater to the individual needs and interests of each child.

For mathematics, We use the White Rose Maths Schemes of learning at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. White Rose Maths provides foundation for secure learning, confidence and competence in Mathematics. With regards to Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qatar History we follow the National Curriculum Standards for Qatar as set by MOEHE.

At KS2, pupils study a wide range of subjects, most of which they will continue to build on as they progress into the next key stages. For subjects such as English, Global perspectives, Science, ICT/Computing and Art and Design we use the Cambridge Primary Curriculum.

KS3 pupils at Iqra Academy study for IGCSE qualifications. The Key Stage 3 curriculum builds on the experiences students have had at their primary school. Our aim is to maintain the strengths of the primary approach as we introduce teaching by subject specialists. In particular, we want our pupil to use their skills across the curriculum and not to confine them to the subject in which they happen to be learned.

For English, Mathematics, Science, ICT/Computing, and Art & Design, we follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum. Arabic, Islamic Studies, and Qatar History follow the National Curriculum Standards for Qatar.

KS4 pupils at Iqra Academy study for IGCSE qualifications. Each subject is usually studied over a period of two years with final examinations taking place at the end of Year 11. The IGCSE subjects taken are a mix of compulsory subjects and optional subjects. Pupils will also continue to be taught Usool-Ul-Deen and Qura’an memorisation.

Compulsory Subjects

All pupils must study IGCSE English (language and/or literature) or IGCSE English as a Second Language, IGCSE Mathematics, IGCSE Science, Arabic and Islam (MOEHE). For subjects excluding Arabic and Islam, we will be using the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. This builds on the knowledge and skills gained at the lower secondary and primary stage. :

We make every effort to timetable a broad and balanced subject combination for our pupils. However, due to timetable constraints, the optional subjects are split into option blocks from which the pupils can chose.

The Key Stage 5 curriculum will also follow the specifications of the Cambridge International Examination Boards. Subjects to choose from will include, but are not limited to: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, ICT, English Literature and PE. Pupils whose first language is Arabic must select Arabic as one of their choices. The options for courses at KS4 and KS5 could slightly vary from year to year depending on teacher expertise and the pupil’s demands and abilities.
